In a blink of an eye, our little girl has grown up. For weeks it seems she was determined to be in control and would only use the potty when she felt like she wanted. We pleaded, we begged, we even resorted to M&Ms. Today though, I sent her off to school with a new pack of pull ups and her glittery and very pink princess underwear. We were both determined to give it a go.
Her teacher came rushing up to me to in Y's classroom to tell me that my baby girl did a great job today and stayed dry the whole day. The big smile on her face and my sheer excitement was too much to bear. I had anticipated a day like this soon, but when the words were uttered, I started feeling sad.
How is it that a child can so quickly absorb and learn just about anything you say and do? True, they are trained like all of us, conditioned like Pavlovian canines, to do things on cue. Every day of her life thus far had been filled with wet and soiled diapers, and some poor soul coming to her rescue to get her out of said clothes protector. Then without you knowing, she realizes the sensation, and has enough courage and forethought to tell someone before she does her business as she has always done.
The minutes upon minutes of agony, patiently waiting for a sprinkle or a nugget, and to sit there with her as she contemplates her next move can be just about as fun as watching paint dry. This is certainly harder than just laying her on a changing table to switch her out of one diaper into another. But the reality that her dependence on me and daddy are disappearing so quickly, that it does indeed make me quite glum. Our baby girl is no longer a baby she says so matter of factly. Mommy, I'm a big girl now.
